Old topic I know, but I thought I would share an interesting/funny Coyote story...
I was caching in a cemetery in WI close to dusk - still plenty of light, but the day was overcast, and it was that weather where its almost 'misting' before the rain starts.
This was in fall - everything was brown, leaves had fallen. The cache was down a mud/dirt road in the wooded area next to/behind the cemetery. Got to the cache site - a big fallen log. Found it, signed the log. As I was replacing the cache, I heard movement around me. (I was alone, fun fun fun) I started to head back out, still hearing movement. Then, I heard the first coyote start yipping, which, didnt alarm me too much. But then, as I was headed out the road - which still had another wooded 500 feet easy ahead of me, I started hearing MORE coyotes. Yipping back and forth, movement on all sides, following me as I headed out.
I couldnt SEE them, but I could hear them to my left, my right, and behind me. If I had to guess, I would have guessed at least 5-7 of them just circling around watching me move out. As I moved faster, they seemed to get more vocal and excited - which alarmed me to say the least - they didnt care that I knew they were there!!
So.. needless to say - I RAN my happy butt out of that road, and as I ran I heard them start running as well, basically not caring how much noise they made while chasing.
THAT was my scariest experience with coyotes - usually I find them to be VERY afraid. I just recently encountered two while going for a night cache - I heard something - pointed my GPS screen, and saw eyes. When they realized I saw them - about 15 feet away - they RAN.
But, when you start feeling hunted - it gets pretty creepy.
