Wierd Structure Just past the remains of the old house
« on: June 15, 2006, 11:33:06 PM »
I went exploring around the other day and we found this just past the old house remains.

I have no idea what it is or what purpose it would serve but theres a doorway and everything.  I'd feel bad for who ever build it if it got destroyed.  It looks like it took alot of time to make.

Any guesses?

I also went to Bachelor's Grove today, June 16.  My friend and I also noticed it there and took several pics.  I will post them a little later.  He said it was not there last month when he went.  We also heard weird sounds like metal and wood work going on around this location.  Yet we appeared to be the only ones around...

I found something similar back in 2002 or 2003 (memory is bad) but it was south of the cemetery. They actually CUT a lot of the trees down to make it.... Sickening.... At least it looks as if who ever made this new one they didn't go and cut stuff down.

I'll have to see if I still have the photos of the one I had seen as I had a few drives fail on me in the past where I lost stuff before I did a backup on CD.....

Thats wierd that this has happened before, honestly i dont know why you would want to make one.  It doesnt seem to serve as anything.  It just looks like it took a long time.

Hello
New to forum, but have been a "grove-ite" since 1972, having spent many days and over nights out there.

Have seen many structures out in the woods.  Everything from shelters built by the homeless, to "forts" built by kids.  But looking at the pics provided, and the lack of any sort of roof or cover, would suggest that
the structure you are looking at is a blind.
One would hope it is being used for benign purposes such as nature photography, or something similar, but have seen and used similar structures myself while hunting elsewhere.
Might be some poaching going on.  If you find the remnants of deer carcasses in the near vicinity, you might have your answer.  There has been a rash of poaching going on in the Cook County preserves lately.

Thats an interesting idea i didnt even think of that, i just assumed it was kids. It is a possibility.

Ah. Very interesting... Thank gosh we did not see any animal remains of any sort. On a different note... When I was walking near there, I saw a bunch of holes and such and was worried it was an occult group who also placed traps there. However, there didn't appear to be any. It was still a little freaky, none the less. Thanks again for your insight!

Well, the first thing that would rule out "kids" for me is not what's there, but what's not there.  No beer cans/bottles, no food wrappers, etc.  Sight appears very clean.  If it was a party palace, that wouldn't be the case.

Occoult useage is always a possibility I suppose.  Are there any candle nubs, dripped wax, incense sticks, etc in or around the structure?

The holes could also be the clue...what do you mean by holes?  How deep?
How far apart?  Is the canopy open overhead?  I ask, because there are those who attempt to grow pot out in the preserves.  But because the soil is not conducive to good growth for that plant, they will spend weeks getting it ready.  The first step is digging the holes.  Then they will backpack the right soil mixture in to fill and plant.  Then comes the chicken wire to keep out the rabbits.   Have seen this ALL over the preserves in various stages.  Usually, they get sloppy and leave the empty soil bags near the parking lot or trail head.  If that were the case, the structure might be a rally point for them, place to meet, rest, lay low.

Ah.  The holes weren't deep.  Not too far apart, either.  They were all in one area.  They just seemed really weird like something out of the movies.  I have to admit I was a little anxious being there.  I did not see a canopy, either.  I should mention that I went back the next day and the Fort was half apart.  I have some pics in the gallery.  Talk to you soon.

Maybe a hut built for poachers?  That could possibly explain the lack of animal remains if they took it with them.. It looks a little to ornate to be built by kids.
