Patrick marker knocked over
« on: May 27, 2009, 06:28:00 AM »
Not sure how long ago this happened, but I was in there today and the Patrick grave is now on its side. I'm pretty sure it was still standing last time I was in the cemetery 2 months ago.

Patrick grave:

About a month ago it was moved and set on top of the base. Over the past weekend it was knocked over, again. Unfortunately when it was set on top of the base it was scratched fairly well on all four sides and received a few missing pieces out if it near the bottom. At the moment I hope nobody else moves it back on the base due to all of the damage it will cause in doing so. At some point in the future it will get some better treatment to help ensure it doesn't get pushed over again. But it really should be left alone until that day comes. It is the vandals knocking the stones around that are causing the real damage so let's not give them a reason to go "pushing" them over. One day it will become virtually impossible to knock over a stone that has been reinforced.

It is a little extra sad to see this particular one being moved around because it is the oldest one still there. The more damage it receives the more it simply takes away from what is left of the historical value, not to mention that it's somebody's grave!

Thanks for the update Mark!

Pete

No problem!

*Sigh* Next thing you know, someone will be stealing it or submerging it in the pond :(

Wow! I thought this kind of thing was history, guess I was wrong. Why can`t these fools just leave things alone and not destroy the markers?

And heres what it looked like yesterday when I was there

It actually looks like someone actually tried to upheave the base (left structure in photo). I noticed this too when I was there yesterday. Or was it always like that?

The base was shifted a little when they put the stone back on top of it. After the vandals pushed it back over the base moved with it. This is exactly the type of situation we don't want. The stone is damaged even more and now the base has been moved...

Anyone reading this topic should leave the stone as-is so it doesn't get damaged more than it already has. So please don't attempt to put it back on the base.

Putting the stone back on the base is what gave vandals a desire to push it over. If it was given some physical support then they wouldn't have been able to move it and they would had given up trying.

Sad but true Pete   I sure hope the stones will be mounted with support in the near future. It just makes me sad that people can be so ignorant.

Hey Pete, I was out at the Grove Sunday about 9:15am and met Rachael and John in the parking lot. The place is getting all grown over and I saw the damaged stone. I hope that one day the stones will be supported and the grass mowed soon as it is looking pretty bad. We did pick up some litter while we were there and even went arpound the pond and picked up junk. The day was nice and the birds sure were singing. That pond has millions of tadpoles in it and if many do survive there will be a chorus on the water for sure.

Thanks for picking up stuff while you're there! I spoke to the Forest Preserve District today about a permit and I should be getting a fax about it fairly soon. They are also going to supply some materials for us to use on the next clean-up.

This may sound strange, but at the moment the more plants that are growing in and around the cemetery the better. There is a visit by FPD officials in-the-making to assess the ecology of the area. The visit is for various reasons but primarily to start the process in restoring the area and protecting it from various intrusive elements. The GRP may become the primary caregivers of the cemetery, as well as a portion of the surrounding area, so I will be attending the assessment. But it will take a little while in doing some major work out there due to the legal steps involved so it's unclear as to what type of grass/weed trimming will be performed inside the cemetery this year.

Tell John I said hello, he hasn't called in a while and he still has my Light Meter I need to pick up.  :(

Hi Pete, I am glad you let me know what is happening with the FPD. It`s good they are going to go there and make a assessment of the area as i`m sure there probably are some plants there that are  on the endangered list. Now if the GRP is going to be the primary  caretakers it`s good they will supply some materials for the task. I for one will do all I can to help and i`m sure John S. and some of his people will help out as well. Let me know when you want to have another cleanup as we should finish where we left off the last time.
I`ll let John know you said Hi.
