Planning an October Meet and Greet!!! Please join in!!
« on: September 28, 2009, 12:47:02 AM »
Hi all!!

After the great time I had meeting everyone at the last cleanup, I was discussing it with rashore and we both thought a 'meet up' of sorts would be a great thing to get everyone together on a casual basis to come together, socialize, and talk!

Ideally, I would like to see 'Meet and Greets' frequently - if not monthly for the site members! These will be great opportunities to discuss future cleanups, events, experiences, etc. Of course, the main goal for me is to help foster a sense of friendship, friendliness, and community in those who wish to be involved in this great location.

I've hosted a fair share of Geocaching events in the past, which are ALWAYS great things to introduce people, and make some new friends. There is no better way to bring people together with a common interest than the lure of a nice walk, and good food and conversation!

So... I am in the process of planning a casual 'Meet and Greet' for the website members - potential, new, and existing - to meet and get to know everyone else. The plans are, we will pop by the Grove for a short time, take a nice walk around and check things out, then we will meet up at a nearby establishment. This will be great for people to get introduced and put a face to the 'usernames', and to talk about some of the things going on at the Grove, and just to generally have a great time.

So, at this point, Im in the beginning stages of planning - but will be posting on this thread as I progress with all the information. To start, I'll list the general idea!

Where: The Grove for a quick walk around! Then we will all move over to an as yet undetermined location for food and tasty beverages and chat!

Who: EVERYONE is welcome! Active members, lurkers, potential members, and those interested in Bachelors Grove! No 'experience' required. This is just a casual meetup - not a cleanup, nothing else. We're all going to be here for the company!

When: October! Im still looking over the calendar, but wanted some input on ideal times/dates. Im thinking a Friday afternoon/early evening as to keep our grove visit absolutely in permitted hours. Input on ALL these things is welcomed and encouraged.

Ideally - Id like to do this before Halloween to perhaps encourage new visitors to the site this month to get to know those involved and maybe to be encouraged to be a part of something bigger than a simple visit. :) As I said - EVERYONE is welcome!! This is an absolutely social event, so just expect to show up, talk, and make new friends.

IF after details are posted you plan on attending - PLEASE drop me a line, or post! That way I can notify the establishment we will be meeting at, and first, find out if meeting there is acceptable (I've never had a 'no' answer!) and to let them know how many will be attending. Any help, input, or ideas of course are welcome! So, please spread the word to those you know, and keep me posted on your interest.

I already met a few of you, and would love to put faces to the names I see here on the forums, as well as meeting some new people. :)

I think this could be a great way to get the word out, and maximize involvement - and heck - who doesn't like to talk and make new friends!?! I hope to see MANY of you there!

Outstanding!! I'm open for most dates on Oct (excepting the weekend of the 9th), and Friday is a pretty good idea :D  I think the alternative day that would be good would be a weekend afternoon/evening... Anyone more local than Paula and I out there that can suggest a decent joint to hang out at after a stroll? Would it be possible to have a bit of a guided stroll to show folks where stuff is at out there? I know it's a small area, but I was clueless as to where the pump slab by the creek was till Pete pointed it out to me...

cheers~

OK.. Im thinking the weekend of the 16th. More specifically, Friday the 16th starting about 5-5:30PM.

I think THIS is the weekend we should use - plenty of time to plan for it yet its BEFORE Halloween.

So.. at this point, Im thinking October 16th as an absolute! Mark your calendars folks!!! The date was the most important thing we needed to set to get things rolling, so you all can plan to be there!

It's great to see that people are more interested in getting together. For me, the best part of clean-ups and restoration work is the amount of friendly conversation that goes on. I find it amazing at how the topics vary so much too. It feels great to see everyone spend some time together, especially at a place I hold dear to my heart. I would really like to see more events where everyone can just hang out and do other various things. So I am more than willing to offer assistance to any of these events and help add some extra enjoyment along the way!

Pete

I of course will take you up on that! =D

I'm VERY much looking forward to regular get-togethers - particularly during the time when regular cleanups may not be as frequent as we'd like. Nothing like social events to keep us all talking about ideas, etc.

As I said, I'd like to make the meetups a regular thing to welcome in the new, and have fun with the existing members! ANY help and enthusiasm is welcome and needed! :)

Now - what we need is some ideas for locations to hold our first event! Anyone have any suggestions? We need a place with good food, and a quiet enough place to chatter - something casual. I always held my Caching events at Buffalo Wild Wings to give you an idea of what we'd ideally find.  Please drop me a PM with suggestions, or feel free to post and discuss!

THANK you all for your time and effort in helping me get the first one planned!

Well, Im going to say at this point NO ONE has debated the 16th, so it is concrete. October 16th will be the date - so mark your calendars, and now we can work on details! =D

Location, Location, Location! Thanks for the note already suggesting some places - I will chat more in depth about it, and then discuss with everyone on here to make a final decision on the 'WHERE'! What kind of nosh does everyone prefer?? =D
Pizza always rocks - and I have a few suggestions that were sent over - thank you Aten!!!

Lets discuss!!

16th would be a definite for me.  I will pass by the area tomorrow and if I find any place that might be more suited to our needs than a pizza joint (hard to argue with a pizza joint, though...), I will PM you (Paula) with more suggestions....

I'm going to start with Fox's pizza on 143rd Street which is located west of the cemetery. It sounds like it would be very easy for everyone to find since we only need to focus on one road to follow.

Paula, Foxes Pizza is one of the best Pizza`s you can get believe me. I guess I forgot to mention that the place is a bit Irish so the booze is no problem and atmosphere was always good there LOL.

Hi everyone!

It looks as though we have our location! Everyone seems to like the idea of meeting at Fox's for Pizza.
Im absolutely for it, because I could LIVE on pizza. =D

So... Thats our spot!

Fox's Pizza
9655 W 143rd St
Orland Park

Now.. to decide on the time!
I'm thinking since sunset will be earlier in the day here in October - if we want a short time to visit the Grove before pigging out. We need to assemble slightly earlier in the day. So... my thoughts are:

Meet at 4:30PM IN BG - we will hang here till everyone arrives, then, we will talk, check things out, etc and then from there when everyone is present and ready - we will head over for food and good conversation!

Im not listing an event 'end' time, because frankly, it depends on how long winded we all are. =)
I guess its over when its over! From experience - I used to list end times for caching events, and they never ended when I listed, so I just stopped listing an event end time. :) I think the earliest we would likely end up at Fox's is 6:30 so we will plan for a few hours chatting after that!

So, I think 4:30PM we will start arriving, and just hang until everyone shows up! :) Feel free to drop me a PM for my Cell number, so if there are any questions - you can just ring me!

Sound good to everyone???

Sunset time is estimated to be 6:05PM on the 16th.  I think 4:30PM is reasonable as long people all show up close to the meet time and that would give us about an hour to look around BG before the icy winter sludge comes in...

I'll see you all there!

I made reservations at Fox's. For those of you that live in the city of Chicago, or elsewhere, and haven't had a chance to make it out to any of the events due to a lack of transportation there is a Metra train station directly across the street from Fox's.

If you plan on attending PLEASE let me know ahead of time so that I can call to reserve more seats. If it is possible that you are attending, but are still not sure, let me know anyway.

Below is the address to Fox's and information about the Metra train station. If you happen to show up late just tell the hostess that you are there for the FRIENDS OF THE FORUM event. Dress casual as this is a relaxing event. Each person is expecting to pay their own check for food and drinks.

Event: FRIENDS OF THE FORUM
Date: Friday, October 16th 2009
Time: 6:00 P.M. until ???

Fox's Restaurant & Pub
9655 W. 143rd Street
Orland Park, IL 60462
[/size]

Food Menu: http://www.foxsrestaurantsandpub.com/orlandpark/menu.html

Maps to find Fox's in relationship to where Bachelors Grove cemetery is located

The cemetery is located on the same street as Fox's so it is easy to find. But here are some maps to help you just in case you need them.

Google Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&sourc ... e&resnum=1

Metra Train Schedule - Departure from Union Station: http://metrarail.com/content/metra/en/h ... ubmit.y=14

Orland Park 143rd Street Train Station

You can always choose a different departure station from the drop down menu on the Metra web site in order to find the correct schedule to the Orland Park 143rd Street station. As a tip, if you are leaving from Union Station then you may want to depart at 5:00pm. Remember, you will want to make sure that you get off at the Orland Park 143rd Street station.

Ummm... are we still meeting at the Rubio Woods parking lot at 4:30PM or has it all been shifted to the restaurant?  I will be there, of course, but I was just wondering if we are nixing the cemetery walk through...

We are still meeting at the cemetery. Those who participate in the forum would figure it out. Otherwise I was keeping it simple for people that only want to visit Fox's.
